Usage Guidelines

While most of our customers have some experience with applying these pigments, we understand that everyone has to start somewhere. If this is your first time, we've put together some basic guidelines to help you achieve the best results.

Applying luminous paint to a watch dial and hands requires precision and careful handling for an even, long-lasting finish. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Preparation

    • Gather Tools: You’ll need fine-tipped brushes, a steady work surface, a loupe or magnifying glass, tweezers, gloves, and protective eyewear.
    • Work in a Dust-Free Environment: Dust can easily settle on the paint, so working in a clean, stable area is essential.
    • Wear Gloves: This helps avoid oils from your skin transferring to the dial and hands, which can interfere with the paint’s adhesion.
  2. Disassemble the Watch

    • Remove the Dial and Hands: Carefully remove the dial and hands from the watch movement. Use tweezers or a hand-removal tool to avoid bending or damaging them.
  3. Mixing the Luminous Paint

    • Combine Paint and Solvent: Mix the pigment and solvent to achieve the right consistency. Usually, a ratio that results in a paste-like consistency is ideal. Too much solvent can thin the paint, making it difficult to apply evenly.
    • Test for Consistency: The paint should be smooth and not too runny. You may want to practise on a small piece of metal or plastic before applying it to the dial.
  4. Application on Hands and Dial Markers

    • Apply to the Dial Markers: Use a fine brush or a toothpick to apply a small amount of luminous paint to each marker or index. Work slowly to avoid uneven coverage.
    • Apply to the Hands: Steady your hand and apply a thin, even coat of paint to the hands. Ensure that the paint does not spread outside the intended area.
    • Multiple Coats (Optional): For a brighter effect, apply two or three thin coats, allowing each to dry before adding the next.
  5. Drying and Curing

    • Let It Dry Fully: Luminous paint can take several hours to fully dry and cure. Place the hands and dial in a dust-free, stable area while they dry.
    • Avoid Touching During Curing: Handling the components before they’re fully cured can smudge or ruin the paint.
  6. Reassembly

    • Reinstall the Dial and Hands Carefully: Once the paint is dry and cured, reassemble the watch carefully to avoid scratching or damaging your work.

Applying luminous paint can be challenging due to its delicate and detailed nature, so take your time to achieve an even finish.
