This classic NATO watch band is crafted from fast-drying ballistic nylon webbing. This high-tech material is ideally suited for military watch straps due to its robustness, comfort, and longevity. The design characteristics of the watch straps significantly reduce the risk of losing a watch, as the strap securely holds the watch at two different points on the wrist, making it virtually impossible for it to come off.
The history of the NATO strap is fascinating. It originated around 40 years ago with a single grey 20 mm band and has since expanded to include various colors, including RAF Blue, Black, Navy Blue, and the iconic James Bond pattern strap. Olive Green was also introduced, along with an increasing variety of regimental colors, Search and Rescue (SAR) straps in vibrant orange, and an incredible range of national colors, police unit colors, and specialized camouflage options for different situations. NATO straps are widely used by military units outside the UK and are also purchased by active military personnel for a diverse array of military watches.
Currently, we manufacture over 200 different variants in various colors. While most of these straps are designed for retail sale, some custom straps are available through various procurement contracts.
The original specification for what we now refer to as the NATO strap was established by the UK Ministry of Defence under Defence Standard 66-47 Issue 2, published on March 30, 2001. This standard succeeded earlier specifications, including Def Stan 66-47 Issue 1 dated November 13, 1992, and two prior standards: Def Stan 66-15 (Part 1) Issue 1 – Strap (Nylon) dated November 30, 1973, and Def Stan 66-15 (Part 2) Issue 1 – Strap (Leather/Nylon) dated January 31, 1974. The current specification data sheet can be downloaded at NATO Strap Current Spec. While the specification is not entirely fixed, it closely aligns with the design used in our strap production, although most bulk contracts require stitching around the buckles.
For over twenty years, we have supplied these straps to a diverse range of clients, including active military personnel, police forces, emergency services, exploration units, Search and Rescue teams, oil and gas companies, marine salvage, and businesses operating in tropical or desert locations. The versatility of NATO straps makes them ideal for these organizations, as they can be easily washed, dry quickly, and do not rot like leather or split like silicone.
NATO straps are also perfect for watches made by leading military contractors as well as robust civilian brands like Seiko, Rolex, Breitling, and Pulsar, to name just a few.
